Random Iowa Caucus Observations
I used to work in Iowa, I remember covering the caucuses in 2000. I’ll never forget being a 25-year-old kid reporter, having to tell John Ashcroft that we were not interested in talking with him. He walked to the door of our TV station alone. A funny sight to see a U.S. Senator, without an entourage.
Tonight, my observations:
Hillary Clinton addressed her supporters standing by a former president and Madeline Albright.
Mike Huckabee addressed his supporters standing by Chuck Norris.
As of 9:45 p.m., Huckabee had about 31,000 caucus votes. To put that in perspective, that is approximately the size of Shakopee.
Ron Paul was leading Rudy Guiliani by 6,000 votes. (Guiliani didn’t really try in Iowa, but still. Interesting.)
Pat Kessler is blogging from Iowa, I’ll be interested to see his thoughts on how the results shook out. To really put all this into perspective, check out Pat’s “Reality Check” from last night. It points out that the caucuses are really no big deal.
(And I just saw a CNN ad for the New Hampshire primaries. The last vote isn’t even counted, and the next contest is already being hyped up. Gotta love it.)
